The term “investing” refers to the act of purchasing assets. An “asset” is defined as something which generates value. This value might be cash income or an increase in the value of the asset, and this concept needs to be distinguished from work where the worker gets paid for their effort or time. Investment occurs at all scales of the financial world from personal finance up to the financial strategies of whole countries.

Residential real estate is the most common area of real estate investment and is generally considered to have less intrinsic risk than commercial real estate.

Other types of assets people invest in can include such things as stocks, bonds, art, metals (such as gold or silver), shares, commodities, jewelry, and many others. As with any form of investment, each of these assets has a degree of risk as well as a degree of likelihood of generating an increase in value over time.
